Sinead Russell lowers Canadian record at swimming worlds
SHANGHAI - Sinead Russell of Oakville, Ont., lowered her Canadian record for the second time Monday and Jillian Tyler of Calgary also advanced to a final in swimming action at the FINA World Aquatic Championships. In the women's 100 backstroke semifinal, Russell clocked 59.68 seconds for the fifth fastest qualifying time for Tuesday's final but only 0.3 seconds off the best time posted by American star Nathalie Coughlin. That bettered her Canadian record of 59.80 set in the morning preliminaries in which she was ranked second.

Gymnast Peng Peng Lee back on top
GATINEAU, Quebec -- Competing for the first time in more than two years, 17-year-old Peng Peng Lee of Toronto stepped back into the limelight as one of Canada's most promising young gymnasts with a remarkable victory in the women's all around event at the Elite Canada meet on Friday. Lee topped the field of 30 competitors on floor and uneven bars and was among the front runners on vault and beam for a total score of 54.800 points. Madeleine Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont., was a close second with 54.300 and Charlotte Mackie of Coquitlam, B.C., was third at 52.100.
